Description

Old Townford Mill was built in 1807 by Samuel Courtauld when he relocated from Pebmarsh to establish his silk mills in Braintree. It is the only remaining original building, as modern mills now extend over a larger area. The mill is three stories high, weatherboarded, with roofs made of grey slate and features rows of windows with small glazing bars. It stands across the river stream and originally housed a beam engine. The mill forms a picturesque group with Mill House.
