7/257 Wall of walled-in garden 120 metres east of Stisted Hall

GV II

Wall of walled-in garden. Early C19. Red brick in Flemish bond, with some limestone and wrought iron. Encloses a rectangular garden 87 metres from W to E, 54 metres from N to S, with later C19 lean-to potting sheds to N of N wall. Plain vehicle entrance 3 metres wide near S end of E wall. 2 wicket gateways in W wall, and one in S wall, with one block of limestone in each jamb, segmental arches of gauged brick, and wrought iron gates with fleur-de-lis terminals. Similar gateway in N part of E wall, blocked with hardboard. 2 plain wicket doorways in N wall, with similar arches and plain doors. The height of the wall varies from 3.5 to 5 metres, reducing from 0.46 metre thick at the base, in 2 chamfered stages to 0.23 metre, the plinths and piers on the outside of the W, N and E walls, and the inside of the S wall. The potting sheds have 3 horizontal sashes of 15+15 lights in the N elevation, a disused flue in the garden wall, and slate roofs. Moulded brick copings, almost complete. The walled-in garden is not shown in a map of 1823 (Essex Record Office, Q/RHi 4/39) but is shown, without the potting sheds, in the tithe map of 1839 (Essex Record Office, D/CT 355).
