Description

The wall of a walled-in garden, dating from the 18th century, is located 300 metres north of Marks Hall Cottages. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and encloses three sides of a rectangular garden measuring 150 metres from northeast to southwest and 60 metres from northwest to southeast, with an opening on the southeast side leading to an artificial lake.

The long northwest wall features a central wicket gateway with a segmental arch, flanked by 14 piers on each side. One of these piers is incorporated into a 19th-century slate-roofed lean-to potting shed at the northeast end. The northeast side includes a central vehicle gateway, although the arch is missing, with five bays on each side. The ground to the northwest of this gateway is level, while it slopes steeply to the southeast, causing the plinths and coping to descend in curved steps.

At the southwest end, there is another central vehicle gateway, which appears to have originally been of Venetian design, though the piers or stanchions are now missing, and the central arch is supported by an intruded lintel. Similar to the other end, the five bays on each side of this gateway also descend steeply. The wall has a thickness of approximately 0.58 metre at the base, tapering with chamfered plinths to 0.23 metre at the top, and stands about 4 metres high. It features moulded brick coping and stone ball finials on the west and south corner piers, with plain stone caps on the north and east corner piers.
