Description

The Old Rectory is a house dating from the early 19th century, with alterations made in the later 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of gault brick in Flemish bond and has a slate roof. The building has a double range plan facing southeast, featuring two internal stacks in the left return and one in the right return, located in the rear range. There is a 20th-century single-storey bay to the left and a two-storey extension to the right, which likely replaced an original single-storey service wing, connecting the house to a square kitchen with a pyramidal roof. The house has two storeys and a cellar, with a three-window range of original sashes consisting of 12 lights, each with flat arches of gauged brick and crown glass. The central entrance features a four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, set within an original moulded doorcase that has scrolls at the base of the jambs and a dentilled flat canopy supported by scrolled brackets, accessed by three stone steps. In the kitchen, there is a tripartite sash window with 4-16-4 lights. The hipped roof has long overhanging eaves and a plain band at the first-floor level. On the northwest (garden) elevation, there is a two-window range of original sashes with 16 lights, one cellar sash with 4+8 lights, and one blocked window that served as an air raid shelter. All ground floor doors, except for the front door, are original and consist of six panels. The ground floor features folding shutters. The original curving staircase has moulded treads, scrolled tread-ends, a rosewood handrail of oval section, and stick balusters. All first-floor doors are four-panel.
