Description
Foresters is an early 19th-century house located on Stoneham Street in Coggeshall. It is built of red brick in Flemish bond, painted only on the front, and has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The building has a square plan facing southwest, with two stacks on the right side and one on the left. At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to extension. The house is two storeys high and features a two-window range of original sash windows with 12 lights, segmental arches, and some crown glass. Above the central door, there is a similar blank aperture on the first floor, which is plastered. The entrance includes a six-panel door, with the upper four panels glazed, set within a simple doorcase that has panelled jambs and a shallow flat canopy supported by scrolled brackets. There are two stone steps leading up to the door, flanked by wrought iron railings consisting of two plain uprights and a D-section rail rolled under at the ends. The building has a chamfered plinth, corner pilasters, and a plain band at the first-floor level, all contributing to its symmetrical elevation and fully hipped roof. This house was formerly known as The Foresters' Arms and is included for its group value.
