Description

These cottages at 2 and 4 Queen Street are part of an early 17th-century house, originally a single building, which was later divided into two cottages in the 19th century. The structure incorporates an earlier 16th-century chimney stack, partially shared with the adjacent building at 24 Stoneham Street. The house is timber-framed with plaster infill and a roof covered in handmade red tiles. The building has four bays facing northwest. Number 2 occupies the two right bays and slightly projects over number 24 Stoneham Street, while number 4 comprises the remaining bays, with two small, single-story extensions at the left end, roofed with slate and sheet metal.

Number 2 has two horizontal sash windows with 12 panes of crown glass on each floor, alongside a 19th-century casement window on the first floor. The front door has a flush surface with two small inserted lights. Number 4 has two horizontal sash windows with 8 panes of glass on the ground floor and a single casement window on the first floor. A door is located on the left return. There is a single horizontal sash window with 12 panes on the first floor of the left return. The timber framing displays jowled posts, face-halved and bladed scarfs in both wallplates.

Inside number 2, a studded partition between the bays has been removed, and a formerly open roof truss at the left end has been blocked with new studs and straight primary bracing. A chamfered axial beam features lamb’s tongue and roll stops. A large hearth made of 16th-century bricks is located on the left wall. There are blocked windows that appear to have originally contained early glazing.
