Description

Well House is an 18th-century house that has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with some areas of painted brick, and has a slate roof. The main part of the house is short and faces northeast, featuring a stack located behind its axis. It is two storeys high, while a three-storey crosswing to the right has a stack on its right side. There is a two-storey stair or closet tower at the back of where the main range and crosswing meet, along with a small two-storey extension from the 20th century to the left of the tower, which has a flat roof. Additionally, there is a single-storey flat-roofed extension at the back of the crosswing.

On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century splayed bay window with sash windows arranged in a 2-4-2 light pattern. The first floor features two early 19th-century sash windows with 16 lights, with the window in the crosswing positioned slightly higher than the one in the main range. The second floor has one similar sash window. The entrance includes a fielded six-panel door with a plain overlight, set within a wider architrave that has a moulded flat canopy above it, and a dentilled band above the door. There are two stone steps leading up to the entrance. The main range also has a plain band above the first-floor window and a plain parapet. The crosswing has a low-pitched roof adorned with 19th-century bargeboards that feature a geometrical design. The right side of the building is faced with painted brick up to a height of one and a half storeys. The structure includes softwood studding and primary straight bracing. The external plaster was renewed in May 1987.
