Description
Monks Wood Cottage is a pair of attached cottages that have been converted into one house. They date from the 18th century and were altered in the 20th century. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof covered in 20th-century red clay pantiles. It has five bays facing east and features a central stack. There is a 20th-century porch at the rear. The cottage is two storeys high and has a four-window range of 19th-century casements. The two ground-floor windows and all first-floor windows have 20th-century external shutters, each with a pierced diamond design. The front door is plain boarded and located in the 20th-century rustic porch, with one blocked doorway present. The rear elevation is partly covered with old tarred elm weatherboards, while the rest is made of 20th-century softwood. The main frame is jointed and pegged, primarily constructed from elm and softwood, with nailed studs that include some reused timber, and primary straight bracing. The axial beams and thin joists are of vertical section. There are two wood-burning hearths that are back to back. The building was subject to an application at the time of the survey in May 1987.
