Description

The Gables is a house built in 1866, designed in the Tudor Revival style. It features red brick in Flemish bond, along with some plastered and roughcast timber framing that includes exposed imitation framing. The roof is covered with handmade red clay tiles, both plain and ornamental. The building has a rectangular plan facing northwest, with axial stacks positioned to the left of center and at the right end. There is an original wing at the rear right and a 20th-century lean-to extension to the left of it.

The house has two storeys. On the ground floor, there are two square bays with window arrangements of 1-3-1 and 1-4-1 lights, as well as one casement window with three lights, all featuring original cast iron lattices. The first floor includes two casement windows with two lights each, and a central oriel window with a 1-3-1 light configuration topped by a hipped roof made of ornamental tiles, all with original cast iron lattices. The entrance has a plain boarded door.

The building showcases a full-length jetty with exposed joists that have a horizontal section, and a bressumer carved with a folded leaf design and the initials O.S.O. 1866, which stands for Onley Savill Onley, né Harvey. Below the jetty, the brickwork is visible, while above it, the imitation framing is adorned with crossed ogee braces, typical of the West Midlands style, and roughcast in between. The house features three gables, each with original fretted and pierced bargeboards, spiked finials, and pendants. The front pitch of the roof is decorated with bands and diamond patterns of plain and ornamental tiles. Each stack is topped with a cornice and has two twisted shafts with octagonal bases and caps, all in the Tudor style. The original casement windows with cast iron lattices are also present at the rear. The Gables is an unaltered example of high-quality Tudor Revival architecture, though the architect remains unknown.
