Description

No. 20 is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is timber framed, roughcast rendered, and has a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a central stack and a wing at the rear left. It stands two storeys high. On the ground floor, there is one early 19th-century sash window with 20 lights. The first floor features one similar sash window and another with 16 lights, both made of crown glass. The entrance has a six-panel door, with four recessed panels and two flush bottom panels, topped by a plain overlight within a doorcase that has a moulded shallow canopy. The low-pitched roof was rebuilt in the late 19th century.

Attached to the house are wrought and cast iron railings and a gate that form a boundary with the street, returning to the house at the right end. The railings have urn terminals on cast iron stanchions and spearheads, standing approximately 0.80 metres high. The rear elevation includes an early 19th-century sash window with 16 lights on each floor, along with a 12-pane fixed light on the first floor of the rear wing. There is also a 19th-century horizontal sash window with 12 lights on the right side of the rear wing.

Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase with a pine handrail, a turned newel at the top, and stick balusters on the landing. An original sash window with 16 lights, featuring handmade glass, is located in the partition wall of the ground floor to the right of the stack. The rear ground-floor hearth contains a late 19th-century cast iron range, while both first-floor hearths have early 19th-century cast iron grates. The property is included for its group value.
