Description

This is a house, now divided into three cottages, originally dating back to the 15th century, with extensions added in the 18th century. The building is timber-framed, with plaster walls and a roof covered in handmade red tiles. The main section facing northwest comprises numbers 24, at the right end, with a central chimney stack, and number 26, at the left end, with an end stack. A 17th-century extension behind number 24 now forms part of number 22. The house is one storey high, with attics. It has three 20th-century leaded casement windows and four additional windows in gabled dormers. There are two 20th-century front doors; the door at number 24 has flanking windows, and both doors are sheltered by flat canopies supported on brackets. Inside number 24, the end of a floor beam projects through the front wall, and also the rear wall, although the tenon on the rear beam is missing. The left bay of number 24 features this beam, along with a connecting axial beam, both of which are chamfered with step stops. Below them are chamfered joists of horizontal section, supported on pegged clamps, forming a floor inserted around 1560. A late 16th-century large wood-burning hearth is located on the left, with a reused, carved mantel beam dating to the early 16th century. The right bay of number 24 contains a 17th-century inserted floor with beams bearing run-out stops and plain, vertically sectioned joists, along with heavily smoke-blackened rafters. The interior of number 26 has not been inspected. Number 22 has an end stack, which was likely originally external but later enclosed. It also has plain, vertically sectioned joists.
