Description
The boundary wall to the south, east, and north-east of Colne Priory dates back to the early 15th century, with repairs made in the late 16th century and mid-17th century. It is constructed of red brick in a transitional header bond, with some sections featuring English and Flemish bonds. Along Lower Holt Street, the wall includes four 20th-century buttresses and a small 19th-century doorway with a two-centred head. The north-east return, next to River House, is from the 17th century and later, featuring dropped sections with 19th-century iron railings. The south-west return, adjacent to Priory Cottage, retains original lower work with 20th-century rebuilding above. This section has a small door with 16th-century panels and a two-centred head, topped by a stepped gable and an early 15th-century stone niche above the door. Historical records indicate that the wall was originally built in 1426 by John Breteman, and John and Henry Dockeman, with repairs documented between 1583 and 1592, and again in the mid-17th century.
