Description
The Coachman Inn is a public house located on Upper Holt Street in Earls Colne. It has origins dating back to the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The main hall range faces northeast along Lower Holt Street and features crosswings on both the left and right sides; the left crosswing is now oversailed by the main range, while the right crosswing projects to the front. There are 19th-century lean-to extensions at the front and along the right side, as well as 20th-century extensions at the rear. The building has a two-over-one window arrangement of 18th-century sashes with glazing bars, and the front extension features 19th-century sashes with side-lights. Inside, there are 18th-century fire surrounds and a side-purlin roof, along with original 15th-century framing and window openings.
