Description
Boxtedds is a house dating from around 1682, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is timber framed, with parts plastered and parts weatherboarded, and has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the house faces southeast and features internal end stacks, while the rear forms a T-plan. The house has two storeys and attics. On the ground floor, there are two splayed bays with sash windows. The first floor has three early 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars and side-lights, with the central window featuring a semi-circular head. There is a central early 19th-century doorcase with a simple pediment and a wrought iron porch with a flat canopy. The eaves cornice is moulded and dentilled, and the roof is gambrel-shaped. Early 19th-century railings run along the front of the house, attached at both ends. Inside, there is much detailing from the 17th and early 19th centuries, including stop-chamfered beams, fireplaces, and doors. Historical records indicate that John Hatch built this house in 1683. The name "Boxtedds" has been traced back to a rental from 1400.
