Description
Rivenhall Place is a substantial house, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, situated within its own grounds and approached by a three-arched brick bridge over a lake, which has been enlarged with a stream. The original core of the house, forming the east part of the present building, was constructed in the 16th century using red brick, with a cross wing at the north end and a tiled roof. Significant alterations occurred in the 18th century when the east front was refaced and three ranges were added to the west end, creating a quadrangular plan. The general appearance of the house is of the 18th century. It is three storeys high with a parapet. The south and east fronts feature a 2:3:2 window range, with the central three-window range projecting slightly. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing balls, set in plain reveals and with segmental arched heads. The south front has a 6:4 window range, and the west section has a 6-window range that also projects slightly. A stone balustrade with a flight of steps runs along the south side of the garden. The original block includes a gable at the west end, featuring a brick coping and the remains of a pinnacle at the apex, as well as an original three-light window. The roofs are tiled, with two original chimney stacks, each having three octagonal shafts. Inside, the house contains notable 16th-to-18th century features, including a staircase dating to around 1700, with turned and twisted balusters, 16th and 17th century panelling, 18th century panelling, and 18th century fireplaces.
