Description

This is an 18th-century house with alterations from the 19th century. The main part of the house faces away from the Braintree Road. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, while the rear wings are timber-framed and plastered, with roofs covered in handmade red clay tiles. The house has a symmetrical plan, roughly square in shape, incorporating several rear wings and a central stairwell. An extension projects from the left side of the front elevation, set back from the main facade. The main elevation has a single axial brick stack positioned slightly left of centre, and two symmetrical stacks at the rear. The front elevation has a slight projection in the central section. The ground floor windows are late 19th-century sashes, with one 12-light sash window added in the 20th century. The first floor has five similar sash windows. All windows have flat brick arches. A central 20th-century door features geometrical tracery in the overlight. The roof has a plain parapet, and a Mansard roof with half-hipped sections. The rear wings have 18th-century windows, which are 3-light and 4-light designs with wrought iron casements. The central stairwell, open to the roof, has twist-turned balusters, while the stair itself has stick balusters and semi-elliptical arches and ceilings.
