Description
Russell's Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is timber framed, roughcast rendered, and has a slate roof. The house has four bays facing northeast, featuring an axial stack one bay from the left end, an internal stack at the right end, and a 19th-century external stack at the left end. There is a three-bay wing behind the right end, forming an L-plan. The building is two storeys high.
On the ground floor, there are three early 19th-century sash windows, each with 16 lights. The first floor has four 18th-century casement windows, three with three lights and one with two lights, each fitted with wrought iron casements and rectangular leading. The entrance features a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set in a pilastered and pedimented doorcase from the early 19th century. The house has a moulded cornice that returns approximately one metre around the ends and a low-pitched roof with a long overhang.
Inside, the main range includes one roll-moulded axial beam, one boxed axial beam, and one chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops. The first floor has been raised by approximately 0.5 metres, and the walls have been raised by about 2 metres to create a high upper storey. Internal tiebeams have been removed. The rear range features chamfered axial beams and late 18th-century windows that are similar to those at the front.
