Description
Brook Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1300, with alterations made in the 16th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. The building features a 3-bay hall aligned northwest to southeast, with a late 16th-century one-bay extension at the southeast end. At the northwest end, there is a mid-16th-century 3-bay crosswing, creating an L-shaped plan, which was extensively re-styled in the 18th century. The hall range has one storey with attics, while the crosswing has two storeys with attics.
The northwest elevation displays a 5-window range of 18th-century sashes with 12 lights, some of which contain crown glass. There are also three 18th or 19th-century horizontally sliding sashes with 8 lights in gabled dormers. The central entrance features a 6-panel door with a shallow hood supported by profiled brackets. On the southwest elevation, there are six 20th-century casements and three additional casements in gabled dormers.
Inside, the hall boasts a cambered main tiebeam with vertical and horizontal spandrel struts, and a crownpost with steeply angled, wide-section 4-way bracing. The crownpost is notable for its heavily moulded base and capital, which includes a series of angle fillets and lacks any rolls, showing significant smoke blackening. The northeast side of the hall has been well restored in the early 20th century. The crosswing originally had a central stack, which was removed in the 18th century.
