Description

Wash Farmhouse is a long-jetty house dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in interlocking concrete tiles. The house has three bays aligned approximately northeast-southwest, facing southeast, and features external chimney stacks at both ends, which were added in the 19th century. There is a single-storey rear extension with an axial chimney stack and a slate roof, built in the early 20th century, creating a T-plan layout.

The building stands two storeys high and has a 20th-century door, along with four 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor. Below the jetty, four plain brackets are exposed, while the remainder is covered. Some of the timber framing is visible inside, with jowled posts and close studding. A transverse beam with double ogee mouldings separates the southwest bay from the middle bay. In the southwest bay, the axial beam is plain-chamfered, and the joists are of horizontal section, also plain-chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The northeast bay features similar joists, but the axial beam is roll-moulded. The middle bay has a plain axial beam.

The crownpost roof is almost complete, with plain crownposts and axial braces only. Originally, there was a chimney in the middle bay, likely timber framed, which was later replaced by a brick stack. This chimney was removed, and the middle floor was rebuilt when the house was converted into two cottages in the early 19th century, with the addition of external chimney stacks. Eventually, it was returned to a single dwelling.
