Description

This is an 18th-century cottage located in Stambourne, aligned north-east to south-west and facing north-west. It is timber framed and has a thatched roof. The exterior walls are plastered, and there is an external chimney stack at the south-west end. A single-storey flat-roofed extension dating to the 20th century is at the rear, and a single-storey extension to the north-east was under construction in August 1983. The cottage is single-storey with attics, featuring a trellised porch and two casement windows added in the 20th century, as well as two more windows in gabled dormers. Some of the timber framing is exposed internally. Construction details include thin primary straight bracing and studding, without jowls. The axial beams are deeply chamfered, and an original framed doorway is positioned through the central tiebeam. The original hearth is made of red brick, approximately 23cm thick, and has been altered to accommodate a coal-burning grate.
