Description
Moat House is an 18th-century house that has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is partly covered with painted brickwork and partly plastered, topped with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house has three bays aligned northeast to southwest, with a central stair and entrance hall, and an external chimney stack at each end, facing southeast. There is a rear wing with a hipped roof extending from the northeast bay, as well as a single-storey extension with a slate lean-to roof beyond it, and another single-storey extension with a slate lean-to roof in the western angle. The building has two storeys and attics. The central entrance has a glazed door set in a simple doorcase, flanked by two double-hung sash windows with 16 lights, dating from the early 19th century. On the first floor, there are two similar windows and one 19th or 20th-century double-hung sash window with 12 lights above the door. The lower storey of the front elevation is faced with brickwork in Flemish bond, while the upper storey is in stretcher bond, with the sides also faced in stretcher bond up to the chimneys, all painted. Inside, the staircase is elegantly curved around an open well, leading from the ground to the attic, featuring a mahogany handrail, plain stick balusters, and scrolled tread ends. All internal doors consist of six panels. The house is situated on a moated site.
