Description

The Quaker Meeting House, located to the rear of numbers 203-5 on Kelvedon High Street, is an early 18th-century building that has been converted into a store. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The building has a rectangular plan that faces southeast, although internally it faces southwest. There is a 20th-century lean-to workshop attached to the front elevation and a small lean-to at the rear.

The structure is two storeys high and includes three 18th-century sash windows with 8 over 12 lights, all set within segmental arches, as well as one oval window with radial tracery. Some of the glass in these windows is crown glass. The doorway has been reduced and altered with 20th-century brickwork. The roof has a double range design with leaded hips, and there is a similar sash window on each side and one at the rear.

The northeast end of the rear elevation has been rebuilt in the 20th century, but it retains the earlier sash window, with flettons on the inside. Inside, the building originally featured a boarded dado around the walls, of which some remains at the northeast end. There are also two wooden platforms for seating that span the full width of the northeast end. The Kelvedon Local Meeting was established in 1711, with records kept at the Friends' Meeting House in Colchester.
