Description

Nos. 5, 5A and 6 on Market Hill is a house that has been converted into two shops with a flat above. It dates from the 17th or 18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring an early 19th-century facade made of red brick in Flemish bond, and is topped with a roof of handmade red plain tiles. It has three bays facing east, with a rear wing that forms a T-plan. There is a 19th-century extension at the back of the wing made of plastered brick, as well as 20th-century two-storey lean-to extensions with felt roofs in the right rear angle. The building is two storeys high. The ground floor has two 20th-century shopfronts with a continuous fascia. On the first floor, there are two early 19th-century sash windows with 16 lights each, featuring flat arches made of gauged brick, and a central sash window with 12 lights, where the upper sash has a semi-circular head and an arch of gauged brick. There are three 20th-century doors, each with a plain overlight. The building has a dentilled and moulded plaster cornice, a plain parapet, and a hipped roof. The interiors of the shops have been fully modernised, and there was no access to the upper storey at the time of the survey in July 1987. This building is included for its group value.
