Description
Round Hill House is a Grade II* listed house located on Lamarsh Hill, dating back to the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring some exposed framing at the front and a roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. It has a three-bay main range facing northeast, which has been shortened by approximately one meter at the right end, and a two-bay crosswing on the left, with an internal chimney stack at the junction. There is a 20th-century single-storey extension behind the right end and a lean-to extension behind the main range, along with a 20th-century porch on the right end.
The house stands two storeys tall and features a continuous jetty supported by four plain brackets, with all joists exposed and a moulded bressumer. Two of the posts have semi-octagonal attached shafts with moulded capitals. Above the jetty, there is exposed studding with 'Suffolk' bracing that is trenched to the outside. The crosswing gable has moulded bargeboards. The ground floor has four 20th-century casement windows, while the first floor has three.
Inside, the house has exposed framing throughout, with moulded beams and joists in all ground floor rooms, and foliate carved stops on the beam of the crosswing. There are two moulded mantel beams and a doorway to the crosswing featuring a four-centred arched head. The main range has cranked braces to the tiebeams, and edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates. Both roofs are constructed with crownposts. The main range has undergone some reconstruction due to the shortening of the right end, while the crosswing features a short crownpost with axial braces mounted on a half-height collar, which is a rare construction in Essex.
