Description
Pentlow Tower is a tower monument built around 1859 by Rev. John Bull, located approximately 90 metres southwest of the house in Pentlow Village. The tower is octagonal in shape, constructed from red brick with gault dressings, and stands about 90 feet tall. The top stage of the tower flares outward and features a gault brick moulded and crenellated turret with cusping underneath. There is flared brick diapering and gault bands at each level, along with two centre-arched windows. The entrance door has nailed moulded rails and muntins, and there is a two-centred chamfered brick doorway above which is a stone plaque that reads, "erected by Rev. John Bull 1859 in Honour of his parents etc." Additionally, there is a stone coat of arms, and flared bricks inscribed with the year 1859. The ground floor has three blocked windows with a two-centre arch design. Inside, there is an oak spiral staircase with a central post. It is said that on a clear day, 48 churches can be seen from the tower, making it one of the very few follies in Essex.
