Description

This row of cottages, located at 3-12 The Causeway, was built in 1883 by architect George Sherrin for the workforce of Samuel Courtauld's nearby textile mill. Designed in the Queen Anne style, the cottages are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with moulded brickwork sourced from the firm of James Brown in Leytonstone. The buildings feature a hipped tiled roof and five tall ribbed brick stacks.

Cottages 3-4 and 11-12 have one large curved gable adorned with panels of moulded bricks featuring a daisy pattern, while the other cottages each have a smaller gable. The row consists of two storeys with a total of 18 windows, two for each cottage except for numbers 3 and 12. The gable windows are cambered 12-pane sashes with brick keystones and shutters, although the top shutter of number 6 was missing at the time of survey. The other set-back windows are 9-pane sashes with horns.

Each doorcase is paired and features wide wooden hoods on brackets, except for numbers 3 and 12, which have cambered doorcases with half-glazed doors. A stringcourse of stylized leaves and a plinth add decorative elements. Each doorcase is accompanied by a low brick wall with wooden seats and original cast iron gates. These cottages were illustrated in 'The British Architect' on 20 March 1885.
