Description
The Old Moot House is a licensed restaurant located on St. James Street in Castle Hedingham. It dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. The building features mainly exposed timber framing with plaster infill, jowled storey posts, heavy studding, and halved braces on the right side. A bressumer with a carved leaf motif is present, and the ground floor has a plastered brick facing. The roof is hipped and covered with red tiles, with gabled crosswings on both the right and left sides. There are red brick chimney stacks on either end of the building.
The structure has two storeys, with a five-window range on the first floor, primarily consisting of 19th-century two-light vertically sliding sash windows, along with a three-light small paned casement window on the left crosswing. The ground floor features a six-window range of mainly vari-light casements and vertically sliding sashes with glazing bars. A central vertically boarded door is set in a plain surround. It is noted that the rear of this building may be interlinked with 2 and 4 King Street.
