Description
The building is a Post Office, originally a house and Post Office, located on St. James Street in Castle Hedingham. It dates back to the 17th century or earlier, with 18th century and later additions and alterations. The structure is timber framed and plastered, featuring batten decoration on the first floor, along with rose and leaf paterae and cruciform pargetted bands. It has a red tiled roof that is hipped towards the road, supported by two red brick chimney stacks, one of which has attached square shafts. The building includes a moulded eaves cornice and stands three storeys tall with cellars. The façade has a two-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes. The bay shop window has a flat leaded roof with a moulded cornice, and there is a small paned glazed door with three lights above it. Access is provided by three steps, accompanied by an iron post and handrail.
