Description
Overshot Mill House is a house built in the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It has a timber frame, is plastered, and is roofed with handmade red plain tiles. The house has a rectangular plan facing southeast and features two external stacks at the rear. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed extension to the right, which extends to the rear, along with additional flat-roofed single-storey extensions in the rear angle and at the front. The building is two storeys high and has two 20th-century casement windows and one 18th-century two-light window with a wrought iron casement on each floor. The entrance features a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set within a 19th-century trellised porch that has a geometric design and a flat roof. The roof is hipped, with shaped sprockets below the eaves and jowled posts. Inside, the entrance hall has a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists that are horizontal in section, while other joists are plastered to the soffits. The walls were raised approximately 1.5 meters in the 18th century. According to "Colne Engaine, the Story of an Essex Parish," published in 1975, this house and Overshot Mill, referenced as item 6/22, are believed to date from 1640 based on deeds; however, physical evidence, particularly the joists, suggests an earlier origin, possibly with alterations made in 1640.
