Description
Over Hall is an early 19th-century house constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with tuck pointing and a slate roof. The main block is rectangular and faces west, with two service wings at the rear. The building has two storeys. On the ground floor, there are four French windows featuring some crown glass. The first floor has five sash windows with 12 lights, each adorned with shallow segmental arches made of gauged brick and original external sliding louvred shutters. The entrance boasts central double half-glazed doors topped with an overlight, framed by a Greek Doric portico that includes a triglyph frieze and guttae, leading up to four stone steps. The façade is enhanced by four plain giant pilasters and a terrace covered by a tented metal canopy supported by cast iron stanchions. The eaves are long and overhanging, and the roof is hipped with a shallow pitch.
On the right side of the building, there are two similar French windows, and on the first floor, there are two matching sashes (without shutters) and one round window featuring radial tracery. Inside, the house contains two original staircases with slender turned balusters, a six-panel door, and many original features. A bargain and sale from 1810 indicates that the property was sold by Isaac Brown and John Share to John Jeremiah Mayhew. Additionally, an inscription reading 'NIA 1834' is burned into the wood below the stairs, and a slate found in the roof is inscribed with 'John White, Earl's Colne, May the 21, 1831, Z. Rogers, J. Newport, Bricklayers'.
