Description
Nos. 58 and 60 Church Street are two houses that were originally one house, dating from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The building is timber framed and roughcast rendered at the front, while the sides are plastered. It has a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The main section of the house faces northwest and features an axial stack at the left end and a rear stack near the right end. There are two adjacent rear wings, each with a single-storey lean-to extension; the extension for No. 58 is weatherboarded with a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a two-window range of early 19th-century sashes with 16 lights, some of which contain crown glass.
No. 58 has a six-panel door where the bottom panels are flush with inserted glazing in four panels, set within an early 19th-century simple doorcase that has a moulded pediment supported by profiled brackets. There is one stone step leading up to the door, which is almost flush with the pavement. No. 60 features a similar door, but with the top four panels fielded, and it is set in a similar doorcase. Both houses have a moulded eaves cornice. At the rear of No. 58, there is a 19th-century horizontal sash window with 15+15 lights on the ground floor, while No. 60 has an early 19th-century sash window with 16 lights on the first floor. Access to the interiors was not obtained. The building is part of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) 32.
