Description
No. 70 on Church Street is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the house faces northwest and features a 19th-century stack at the right end and another stack near the left end. There are two rear wings, each with an external stack at the end, although the left wing's stack is truncated. Between the wings, there is a small single-storey lean-to, creating a half-H plan. The house has two storeys and a two-window range of early 19th-century sashes with 16 lights, along with a sash of 12 lights above the central early 19th-century six-panel door. The bottom panels of the door are flush, while the others are moulded, set in a plain doorcase with a moulded pediment on profiled brackets. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top.
On the rear elevation, above the lean-to, there are three mid-19th-century casements with marginal lights and red and blue glass. On the left elevation of the right wing, there is an 18th-century window with three transomed lights, featuring one wrought iron casement and rectangular leading. Most of the timber frame is hidden by interior finishes, but some studding is exposed on the first floor of the right wing, showcasing a trenched curved brace. The left wallplate is chamfered with step stops and has one arched brace, while the right wallplate is rebated for a shutter. The early 19th-century straight stair has one turned newel (with one renewed) and a moulded pine handrail with stick balusters. The right ground-floor room contains an 18th-century two-panel pine door and an 18th-century cupboard with an arched head, fluted pilasters, a spheroid interior, profiled shelves, and fielded panelled doors below. The ground floor features two early 19th-century semi-elliptical arches, as well as two arches over the first-floor landing.
