Description
Barclay's Bank is an early 19th-century building made of buff gault brick, located at 1 Bank Street in Braintree. The structure has three storeys and features a return front on Rayne Road. The east front has five windows, while the north and south ends each have two windows that project slightly and are topped with pediments. The north front has three windows, and the east and west ends each have one window that also breaks forward slightly. The windows are double-hung sashes, with glazing bars in the first and second storey windows, and 20th-century plain glass in the ground storey windows. The first storey windows are adorned with moulded stucco architraves and cornices supported by console brackets. A stucco band runs between the ground and first storeys. The east front features a central doorway with a stucco Doric porch that has square pillars and fluted columns in antis, along with a frieze and cornice. The north front has a central Ionic stucco porch with pilasters, plain columns in antis, a frieze, and a cornice. The roof is slate with a wooden eaves cornice. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 1, 3, 9, and 11 Bank Street, as well as Nos 2 to 8 (even) Rayne Road, the White Hart Hotel, and No 2 Bocking End.
