Description

An 18th-century timber-framed and plastered house, significantly altered, is located at 6 and 8 Rayne Road, Bocking. The building is three storeys high and has a six-window range facing Rayne Road and a two-window range facing Panfield Lane. It features 19th century or later double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and small square panes in the upper sashes, all within flush-cased frames. The first-storey windows have stucco aprons, and the front elevation displays stucco quoins. The ground storey incorporates a 20th-century shop. The roofs are tiled and hipped. Local tradition suggests the house may be part of the dwelling where John Bunyan stayed while preaching at Docking End. The building forms a group with the White Hart Hotel, No 2 Bocking End, and Nos 1, 3, 9, 11 Bank Street, Braintree.
