Description

This barn, located approximately 60 metres south-south-west of Great Bardfield Hall, dates back to the early 14th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, featuring a main roof made of corrugated asbestos and a midstrey roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. The barn consists of seven bays aligned in a north-northwest to south-southeast direction, with two aisles and a midstrey to the east of the third bay from the north end.

The structure includes jowled posts, heavy studding, and arched braces that are trenched inside the studs. The arcade plates exhibit trait-de-Jupiter scarfs, and there are arched braces connecting to these plates. Some posts and aisle ties have oblique trenches for passing-braces from the wallposts to the tiebeams, while others feature raking shores with short aisle ties extending from the shores to the posts. Certain aisle ties are jointed to the wallplates using reversed assembly techniques. One tiebeam has been replaced in the 19th or 20th century. The walls originally had grooves for infill of wattle and daub, but they have been concreted between the studs up to a height of one metre. The presence of arched braces to the tiebeams and various structural anomalies suggest that while the barn is primarily from the early 14th century, some rebuilding occurred no later than the 16th century.
