FAIRSTEAD RANK'S GREEN (north side) Rank's Green Farm

(Formerly listed as Rank's Green Farmhouse)

II

House. Early C18, altered in C20. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays facing S, with approximately axial stack in second bay from right, and early C19 stack in left end wall. Original full-length lean-to at rear, forming a house comparable with the 'saltbox houses' of New England. Large C20 gabled porch at right end. 2 storeys with attics. 3-window range of C20 casements. 4-panel door in simple doorcase with dentilled hood on scrolled brackets. Roof half-hipped. Pegged hardwood frame. Chamfered axial beams with plain joists of vertical section. Clasped purlin roof with ridge, without wind bracing. Large wood-burning hearth facing right, the mantel bead chamfered with tomb's tongue stops. Wood-burning hearth facing left, reduced for C19 grate. On first floor, small C18 wrought iron grate facing left, a rare survival. Stair to rear of stack, with turned hardwood posts and stick balusters.
