Description

Rank's Green Farm is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with handmade red clay tiles. The building has four bays facing south, featuring an approximately axial stack in the second bay from the right and an early 19th-century stack in the left end wall. At the rear, there is an original full-length lean-to, which makes the house similar to the 'saltbox houses' found in New England.

The house is two storeys high with attics and has a three-window range of 20th-century casements. The entrance features a four-panel door set in a simple doorcase that has a dentilled hood supported by scrolled brackets. The roof is half-hipped, and the structure has a pegged hardwood frame. Inside, there are chamfered axial beams with plain joists of vertical section. The roof structure includes clasped purlins and a ridge without wind bracing.

There are two large wood-burning hearths, one facing right with a mantel that has a bead chamfered with tomb's tongue stops, and another facing left that has been reduced for a 19th-century grate. On the first floor, there is a small 18th-century wrought iron grate facing left, which is a rare survival. The staircase is located at the rear of the stack and features turned hardwood posts and stick balusters.
