Description

Number 7 Cob Cottage and Number 8 are a pair of cottages, originally three, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with extensions from the 18th and 20th centuries. The cottages are timber framed and plastered, with the left-hand bay featuring a fragmentary timber frame that has been clad or replaced in brick, which is now painted. They have a thatched roof and are one storey with attics. A gabled crosswing was added to the right-hand end in the 1920s.

The cottages have a six-to-one window range, primarily consisting of 19th-century timber casements, with the windows in No 7 being 20th-century leaded casements. There is a small gabled two-light casement dormer beneath a tiled roof. The front features two boarded doors that served the former Nos 8 and 9. An axial red brick stack, built in two phases, is located between Nos 7 and 8, while a thin painted stack is situated between No 7 and its crosswing. The remains of a former stack at the left-hand end is now internal. No 7 retains part of its exposed frame, while Nos 8 and 9 (formerly) have exposed frames, with the far left frame likely being of later construction. There is also part of an exposed inglenook fireplace and a clasped purlin roof of various builds where visible. The front wall of the main range is recessed under overhanging eaves that were formerly supported on posts. A lease for the property exists from 1555.
