Description
Nos 35 to 39 Church Lane, formerly known as "The Tabor House," is an early 16th century timber-framed and plastered house with a late 16th century addition to the south and a gable at the north end. The building has two storeys, with the upper storey featuring jettying across the front. It includes a moulded and carved bressumer supported by curved and moulded brackets that spring from attached shafts with capitals. The ground storey displays exposed timber framing and contains a range of four windows with casements, some of which have old leaded lights. A 16th century doorway features a four-centered arch set within a square head. The roof is tiled and includes a central chimney stack from the 16th century, which has fluted shafts and moulded brick caps, built on a square base. The original stack has been rebuilt in the same style. Inside, the house retains exposed beams and some original features. John Bunyan is said to have stayed here.
