Description

Justices Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, originally built as an in-line hall house. It features an inserted floor and a chimneystack, and was refronted and refenestrated in the early 20th century. The building is timber-framed and has been refronted with pargeting that includes sunburst patterns and applied thin timber framing with diamond shapes. The roof is thatched and has one 17th-century off-central external brick chimneystack and one 19th-century end chimneystack. The cottage is one storey with attics and has irregular fenestration. The front elevation includes one gabled dormer, one window, and an early 20th-century studded plank door with a flat wooden hood. The rear elevation is obscured by a 1998 extension, which is not of special interest, but retains one dormer and one window to the right of the extension. The windows are 20th-century sealed double-glazed units with stuck-on lead to simulate leaded lights.

Inside, there is a close-studded oak frame with the studs pegged and braces trenched externally. The former parlour features horizontal joists housed into a bridging joist with a soffit tenon and diminished haunch, while the former open hall has a large brick open fireplace with a wooden bressumer that carries a warding symbol and wooden pads beneath. The inserted floor over the hall is supported by an axial bridging joist with housed soffit tenons and diminished haunches, and there are jowled storey posts. The original rafters are still in place, complete with daub.
