Description

The house at Ffuleslo, Finchfield, dates from the 16th century and has been altered in the 20th century. It is a timber-framed building, with plaster infill and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The house originally comprised four bays facing north, with a central chimney stack. A crosswing was added to the east end around 1930, and a single-storey, front lean-to extension was built in the 20th century. The house is one storey in height with attics. The ground floor has two bow windows and two casement windows, all dating to the 20th century, while the first floor features one 20th-century casement window and another within a gabled dormer. A 20th-century gabled porch shelters the front door.

Inside, the house retains jowled posts, heavy studding with curved braces trenched to the inside, chamfered axial beams, and plain, horizontally sectioned joists supported on pegged clamps. Some internal tiebeams have been severed or are missing. The internal truss located near the west end originally lacked a tiebeam, instead featuring a collar which remains in place. This indicates that the two western bays may have originally been storeyed, although the present floor in that area is not original. The roof east of the chimney stack has been rebuilt, and the western part of the roof is currently inaccessible. The actor John Gielgud occupied the house from 1933 to 1935. The current name is an archaic spelling of Foulslough.
