Description

This building in Earls Colne High Street began as a house, now divided into three shops. It incorporates elements from the 14th century and the 17th century, with alterations made in 1902. The construction is timber-framed, with plastering and exposed imitation framing. The exterior is partially covered with red ornamental tiles, and the roof is tiled with red plain tiles.

A 14th-century crosswing is located on the left side, while the main range likely dates from the 17th century and perhaps incorporates remains of a 13th-century open hall that originally stood on the same site. A front range was added in 1902. The front of the building has two shopfronts on the ground floor, alongside an entrance and an early 20th-century casement window for the Post Office. The first floor features a 1:3:1 window arrangement of early 20th-century sash windows, with glazing bars only in the upper sashes. Side-lights are present on the end sashes. Gables are located at each end of the front elevation, and the roof ridge is decorated with pierced crested tiles.

Internally, much of the original timber framing remains visible, including jowled posts, arch-braced wall frames, and smoke-blackened medieval rafters, which were re-used in the 17th-century raised roof of the hall block.
