Description
Sparrows is a house of probable 16th-century or earlier origin, with later alterations and additions. It is timber-framed and plastered, with exposed timber framework and some painted brick. The roof is red tiled, hipped on the left side, with a forward-gabled crosswing to the right. There are three brick chimney stacks; one is external on the left, and the others have square shafts attached to the right. The house has two storeys and a 3:1 window arrangement featuring 20th-century square leaded vari-light casements. A gabled red tiled porch with timber support posts and a vertically boarded door is situated on the left return of the crosswing.
Inside, much of the timber frame is exposed. The main range was originally jettied on the first floor, and the rear crosswing likely had a crown post roof. The roof is now of a side purlin structure with arched braces to the purlins. Features include jowled storey posts, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, cambered tie beams, and halved arch braces to some walls. Two inglenook fireplaces are present; one has a semi-circular arch leading to a first-floor room. Previous confusion existed regarding the house's original name and listing, with the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments description, "Bridge House," accurately describing this property and not the current building designated as 7/189.
