Description

This is an aisled barn located approximately 25 metres north-north-east of Birdbrook Hall, dating from the late 14th century, with extensions made in the 17th and 19th centuries. The barn is timber framed, weatherboarded, and has a roof covered with corrugated iron. It consists of four bays aligned roughly northeast-southwest, with the original late 14th-century structure extended to the southwest by three bays and to the northeast by one bay in the 17th century. There are two lean-to midstreys on the southeast side and a northwest extension from the 19th century. The barn features a gablet at the southwest end and a gable at the northeast end, with jowled arcade posts.

The original section, which used to extend further southwest, includes wide arched braces connecting the arcade posts to the arcade plates and tiebeams, as well as splayed scarfs with bridled butts in the arcade plates. The aisle ties are jowled against the arcade plates, supported by raking shores to the jowls. The assembly at the wallplates is reversed, and the walls below have been rebuilt with primary straight bracing. The roof is a crown post design, featuring plain crown posts with only axial braces. In the southwest extension, there are thinner braces, and the original walls have face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates, with a typical assembly and a clasped purlin roof. The timbers at the northeast gable end show signs of charring.
