TL 74 SW BIRDBROOK THE STREET, 3/16 WEST SIDE Barn approx. 25 metres NNE of Birdbrook Hall

GV II*

Aisled barn, late C14, extended in C17 and C19. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with corrugated iron. 4 bays aligned approx. NE-SW, late C14, extended to SW by 3 bays and to NE by one bay in C17. 2 lean-to midstreys to SE. NW extension, C19. Gablet at SW, gable at NE. Jowled arcade posts. Original part, which formerly extended further to SW, has wide arched braces from arcade posts to arcade plates and tiebeams, splayed scarfs with bridled butts in arcade plates (Hewett 1980, figure 262); aisle ties jowled against arcade plates, with raking shores to the jowls; reversed assembly at wallplates, walls rebuilt below with primary straight bracing; crown post roof, plain crownposts with axial braces only. In SW extension, thinner braces, original walls with face-halved and bladed scarfs in wallplates, normal assembly, clasped purlin roof. At NE gable end the timbers are charred.
