Description

John Ray Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th or 17th century, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, featuring 20th-century pargetting, and has a red plain tiled roof. The cottage has gabled dormers at both the front and rear, and a red brick chimney stack located to the left and at the rear of a right-side single storey lean-to extension. The building is one storey with attics and includes a single storey porch extension at the front left. There are three casement windows, all with diamond leaded glass. A boarded door is situated on the right return of the porch extension. Inside, much of the timber frame is exposed, showcasing heavy wide spaced studs, stop-chamfered bridging joists, and jowled storey posts. The interior also features an inglenook fireplace. This cottage is historically significant as the birthplace and childhood home of John Ray, a notable botanist and natural historian who lived from 1627 to 1702.
