Description
Twin Gables is a house, originally one dwelling, now divided into two, dating from 1674. It is located on the south side of High Street, Earls Colne. The house is timber-framed and has a roughcast exterior, partly faced with painted brick, and a roof of handmade red plain tiles.
The building comprises two bays and a central chimney bay, with a long jetty projecting from the ground floor. A 20th-century extension is located at the rear. The front has two storeys and attics, with a two-window arrangement of early 19th-century sash windows, each containing 16 lights and some crown glass, with segmental heads to the ground floor. A central, 19th-century gabled brick porch provides access to the two 20th-century doors, which have doorways with 4-centred heads and a tiled roof. There are two projecting jettied gables, with carved and moulded bressumers, the upper one inscribed "EP 1674," referring to Edward Potter junior. A large gabled dormer window on the rear roof encompasses the original attic stair. The roof has side purlins with intermediate collars. Historical records, including those from the Earls Colne WEA’s "Wherein I Dwell" publication, provide further detail.
