Description
Madingley School is a school building and attached school house, now used for a play group. It was built in 1844, with an extension around 1870 and further additions in the 20th century. The structure is made of gault brick in rat-trap bond and features a roof covered in large fish-scale tiles, with coped gables and kneelers. There is a central brick stack with four linked flues set diagonally, and the building is designed in a simplified Tudor style.
The main school room is the central range, with the former house acting as a projecting cross wing to the left. The façade includes a three-window range featuring 3- and 4-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows, with a 3-light window above to the left. To the right, there is a projecting porch with a shaped gable, a datestone, and a round-arched doorway with a door. A large tall window is located on the right end gable. The rear of the building has extensions from around 1870 and the 20th century.
Inside, the school room retains its open roof. This village school has been slightly altered but still showcases its unusual roof tiles and brickwork.
