Description
The memorial at Whittlesford Cross is located at Guildhall Corner, on a main road junction in the village. Made of Portland stone, it features a Latin cross atop a tall, slender shaft, designed in the style of a medieval churchyard cross. The shaft is set into a square, two-stage plinth. On the front of the lower part of the plinth facing the road, there is an inscription that reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WHITTLESFORD WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 IN HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE."
Fifteen names are carved on the sides of the plinth, and on the rear, it states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The upper part of the plinth bears the dates "1939 - 1945" along with eight names.
The entire structure stands on a three-stage octagonal stepped base. The memorial area is enclosed at the back by an angled brick wall topped with railings.
