Description
Orchard Cottage is a cottage dating from around 1600, originally built for Thomas Wells. The cottage has been extended at the rear and underwent significant alterations in 1745, including changes to the roof. It has been renovated and features a timber frame with a rendered exterior and a mansard roof that is partly tiled and partly pantiled. There is a gault brick axial ridge stack. The building is one storey with an attic, featuring three gable dormers and three enlarged window openings fitted with 19th-century three-light, cross frame casements. The entrance leads to a lobby. Inside, much of the original framing has been replaced, but some 16th and 17th-century framing can still be seen in the wall between the kitchen addition and the original east gable end. The hearth and stack are made of clunch, with the jambs in narrow gault brick from 1745 and later 19th-century brickwork in the upper courses of the stack. An adjoining outbuilding, also constructed of clunch, is associated with the cottage.
