Description

The Bury is a house built in 1593 for Sir Richard Warren, which underwent significant remodeling in the late 17th century and was extended at the rear around 1740. The structure features a timber frame with plaster and rough cast rendering, along with some red brick casing. It has a tiled roof with a partly rebuilt red brick ridge stack containing four flues and 19th-century barge boarding on the gable end. The building is arranged in an L-plan with a main range and a northeast crosswing, standing two storeys high with an attic.

The original gabled two-storey bay, which has 19th-century casements, is located at the hall, while there are three modern casements and a doorway leading to the crosswing. A gabled stair turret can be found at the rear, and the service wing, constructed around 1740, is made of red brick in Flemish bond with a tiled roof and a ridge stack, also standing two storeys high with a brick band between the storeys.

Inside, the hall features a clunch fireplace and an overmantel from 1593, displaying the shield and initials of Sir Richard Warren and his wife. The parlour contains reset late 16th or early 17th-century square sunk panelling. A closed-string staircase from around 1740 showcases square newels and balusters designed as Roman Doric columns with a moulded rail. The roof is constructed with staggered butt purlins, and the front range includes a cellar. An upper room features a bolection moulded fireplace surround.
