Description

This is a late 17th-century house located on the High Street in Cottenham. A lean-to addition was built at the rear in the 19th century, and a further extension was added to the right-hand side in the 20th century. The exterior is mainly clear red brick with broad mortar courses, although the front wall has been rendered. It features projecting red brick end stacks, with one late 17th-century stack displaying offsets and a moulded string. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with slate.

The house was originally arranged with a single range and two rooms, possessing original front and rear doorways at the lower end of the right-hand room, though these doorways are now blocked. It is two storeys high and has two recessed 19th-century hung sashes with sixteen panes each on the upper floor. Similar windows are present at ground floor level, positioned on either side of the former doorway.

Inside, an original hearth with original red brick has been exposed. An original late 17th-century arch, originally leading to a window opening, is visible in the rear wall at first-floor level but is now sealed. The property has a cellar. The site was previously part of the Manor of Crowlands, rebuilt around 1454, but no remains of this earlier structure are apparent. The house is in an area susceptible to flooding.
